CCV 2017
Visual identity/institutional communication
Primarily: film programmes
● I had to leave Viseu for a few years to, upon returning, come face to face with the local film club. And the Cine Clube de Viseu has very special characteristics: a long history dating back to 1955; an audience that has become a community of resistance — loyal, enthusiastic, engaged; a strong, diverse, highly democratic board; and a semi‑professional structure that ensures the coordination and work needed for a rich regular programme, one‑off events in the city and region, educational activities in schools, the publication of one of the last printed cinema magazines, and the preparation of applications to national and international funds to develop new projects and cultivate new audiences. A public utility institution since 1998.
● So... love at first sight. And, as luck would have it, in February 2017 they opened a call for recruitment for a new graphic designer. I was selected among other candidates after portfolio reviews and the development of an admission proposal (communication for an imagined film series). I quickly realised that the survival and growth of an association like this, looking ahead to the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, depended heavily on a robust communication strategy — a collective effort by a team that remains together to this day.
● I inherited the logo from the previous designer and placed it alongside the Times + monospaced Arial pairing and some unconventional, sometimes even challenging, graphic approaches. I was given an unusual degree of creative freedom, and I used it so that the communication materials would have a discourse of their own — a frame or an atmosphere for each film series — rather than merely being informative. My wish was that the communications, beyond informing, would fulfil their role as a souvenir in their own right.

0. Admission proposal
I applied to become the communication designer for Cine Clube de Viseu in February 2017. In addition to portfolio reviews, candidates were required to complete an exercise: to develop the image for a potential film programme. Keen to demonstrate my knowledge of late 20th‑century Portuguese cinema, I proposed an image that most likely worried the CCV board more than it facilitated a decision — always fascinated by the limits of legibility rather than by immediate communication. Still, I got the role.

1. March 2017
The first film programme I worked on. I drew on aspects quite tangential to cinema. March, Spring, swallows and mimosa flowers, directors' names graffitied.
