Set'13 — Jul'14
Book
Record of all the graphic work — down to the detail and the things left unfinished — that I developed throughout that academic year, even though school projects were not the majority.
I wrote and composed this book following a briefing from the Project course, geared towards the conception of a portfolio, a showcase of work, through a graphic object whose form is committed to its function: with the very character of our work.
Instead of selecting my favourite works from years past, or the most relevant ones, or those that had the most followers, I felt very early on that the approach should avoid an immediate logic of self‑promotion, and instead have a slightly more literary, more autobiographical tone — at times contrite — exposing mistakes, flaws, always pointing towards a final idea, a kind of moral, of wandering, of searching, of perpetually questioning what it means to be doing this rather than something else. I do take myself quite seriously, of course. The truth is, I think most designers Iʼve met take themselves almost none at all. Well, itʼs also true I wouldnʼt go to the trouble if I took myself that seriously.
In this volume are final works, alternative paths, failed proposals, client emails, confessions of laziness and lack of motivation...
— and the way projects ended up impaired. More than proving myself the best designer in my village, I wanted to propose the theoretical possibility of...
a designer being a human like any other — which is quite a silly notion, for who is more spontaneous than a creative? — but I had my reasons,
in an art school context that is quite particular, to find this kind of manifesto/social chronicle/biographical record necessary.
In a year marked by a weariness with school life, social life, by a growing disinterest in the Caldas scene, and a withdrawal inwards,
towards home, the preponderance of domestic life is suggested by the cover lettering, as is the typographic grid of the layout,
which secretly accompanies the outline of the building façade that blocked the sun for most of the day, from my bedroom view.
Setʼ13 — Julʼ14 is a first sketch of what this site would become: more than being committed to selling my work in order to be hired,
I decided to thread a narrative, a progression, a record, design being only the way I spent my days, also revealing how they were spent,
and with a bit of luck someone might want to read it. I mean, luck at the time — today you see this and itʼs fine.
