Sementeira V
Event
Multidisciplinary cultural programme, with a collective visual arts exhibition, concerts, dance and performances, talks, poetry and debates
Collaborative work with Pedrokas, under the signature Cabanões Cardoso Artistic Cooperative
↗ I would very much like to tell you more about Sementeira and what brought me to the Left Bloc :)
● «As its name suggests, Sementeira, a seasonal event, aims to be the fertile ground conducive to creativity and cultural production in all its forms, with the harvest left to the visitorsʼ discretion, without any interference from the organisers (Bloco de Esquerda Viseu) other than creating favourable conditions for the free enjoyment of those who come to its spaces. A meeting place and an exchange of experiences, it has come to include — and intends to continue to do so — events as diverse as exhibitions, recitals, discussion groups and workshops, while also wishing to reaffirm itself as a place of spontaneity and socialising without ever losing sight of the playful and social dimension of creation and culture.» (António Gil)
● Sementeira was born out of conviction and volunteerism, with complete autonomy, taking over a spacious party headquarters in the historic centre to promote the talent of creatives, artists and craftspeople — no sponsorships, no filters, no imposed themes. And in its fifth edition, in 2017, the Cooperativa Artística Cabanões Cardoso (for the purposes of this project, Pedrokas and I) joined the organisation to develop a communication strategy for the event. The result — which would establish a kind of formula for subsequent editions — was based on a performative graphic identity, that is, a collaborative graphic design process that was revealed according to communication needs. It is a work‑in‑progress and our own artistic contribution to the exhibition.
● Highlighting the plurality of artistic proposals and their authors — who had submitted to an open call a few months earlier — our approach involved collecting characters and graphics, extracted from all kinds of everyday printed materials, from receipts to mail, from book covers to budget tables, etc. The most disparate graphics interact on the same plane somewhat like very different artistic proposals coexist in the same exhibition space. The boldness of the resulting compositions challenges legibility, like a message to be deciphered, a game. We have fortunately managed to establish a rapidly recognisable identity, without resorting to the usual graphic lexicon of Marxist parties.

Symbol
We arrived at this idea of a kind of carnivorous plant whose "mouth", rather than for eating, serves to protest, to demand.

"Chamada!" flyers/posters (open call)

Graphic motifs: watering cans

Raw material
We gathered a diverse sample of graphic communication materials, including flyers, invoices, mail, coupons, tickets, labels, books and magazines, from which we extracted hundreds of characters and shapes for Sementeira's typographic compositions. In order to make graphic communication a living moment of the event, and with the aim of representing the pluralism of discourses, with the dynamics of urban communication, this experimental process and other similar ones became a constant in subsequent editions.

Invitation to participate in the preparations — a kind of pre‑event we called "Greenhouses" (since "Sementeira" means "sowing")
Greenhouses
The big novelty of the fifth edition is the Sementeira Greenhouses: from 1 to 6 July (the day the party starts), we keep our doors open so that amid conversation and joy, friends can intervene artistically in the space, whatever each one's talent may be. No, we are not inviting you to sweep stairs or clean toilets — the goal is to gather the seeds of change, to create in company. Come by between 4pm and 11pm, from 1 to 6 July!

Some moments from the Sementeira "Greenhouses". Was this 2017 B.C.? No matter how hard I search, very few photographs remain from this Sementeira :(
