Spei Chorus
Identidade
Choir focused in christian liturgical music
● Spei, from hope. My closeness to Marxist collectives did not prevent — one might even say it indirectly promoted — an unexpected relationship with the Catholic Church, in which I had been baptised and confirmed without conviction, merely fulfilling cultural expectations of the place where I was born and grew up. The desire for a heaven on earth, interpreting the world through contemplation of the weakest: it all makes sense.
● I have a bass voice. After several experiences with other polyphonic choirs performing liturgical repertoire since 2018, in 2022 the opportunity arose to co‑found a new group (in which I am the only one without formal training), first with a view to recording an album for a composer friend, and subsequently to professionalising this practice, regularly animating masses, events and other religious celebrations across the country.
● The visual identity of Spei Chorus emphasises the authentic, human character of live music, performed by musicians without electronic artifice — which may entail inaccuracies and unforeseen events. I chose a calligraphic register, with nib and ink, giving the work an «imperfect», textured, genuine stamp. For the logo symbol, a white dove — hope — drawn from a treble clef. On the posters, typographic compositions frame high‑quality reproductions (available in the public domain) of paintings alluding to biblical episodes aligned with each celebration. The final layer consists of handwritten interventions, in pencil, captioning the information. It is the attempt to express this tension between mortality/sin/error and the divine/gift/perfection.
